A foreign girl at the playground with 外国
Kanji Explanation: Countries and realms with 国
As she explores, Yotsuba finds a playground. She stops to inspect one of the swings, unfamiliar with what it is. A girl passing by notices her and wonders who she is.
- 女の子:
- 「なんかかわった… 外国の子…?」
- “She seems kind of unusual… A kid from another country…?”
- 「それに…」
- “And besides…”
Key Points
1外国の子 means a child from another country
- 外国 means a foreign country. The の links it to 子, describing where the child is from.
2なんかかわった expresses a vague impression
- なんか means something like “somehow” or “kind of” here. It makes the girl’s impression less definite.
- かわった, usually written 変わった, describes someone unusual or different here. It does not mean that she has watched Yotsuba change.
3それに introduces another observation
- それに means “besides” or “on top of that”. The girl has more to add, but this panel leaves the thought unfinished.
