Volume 1 » Page 66

At Professor Agasa’s request, Ran takes Conan home to see if her father will let him stay over for a while. When they reach Ran’s place, her detective father bursts out of the front door, saying he’s heading out on a job.

“I just got a call!!”
“A request came from the parent, saying his daughter was kidnapped by a man dressed in all black!!”
“He wants my help!!”

Key Points

    • In this scene, 誘拐(ゆうかい) means abduction: someone has taken the daughter away unlawfully.

    • された makes it receptive, so the daughter is the victim of the kidnapping.

  2. Parsing the receptive victim and actor

    • (むすめ)が marks the daughter as the subject of 誘拐(ゆうかい)された, the one who received the action of being kidnapped.

    • (くろ)ずくめの(おとこ)に marks the person who did the kidnapping: a man dressed all in black.

  3. (くろ)ずくめの(おとこ) = a man dressed all in black

    • ずくめ means being covered or entirely characterized by something; here, (くろ)ずくめ describes clothing/appearance.

    • The の links that description to (おとこ), giving “a black-clad man”.

  4. Quoted report before the request

    • The と after 誘拐(ゆうかい)された quotes what the parent said or reported.

    • The larger structure is 「『(むすめ)が… 誘拐(ゆうかい)された』と、(おや)から依頼(いらい)()た」: “A request came from the parent, saying that his daughter had been kidnapped…”

    • って is casual quoting, repeating the parent’s message as “he wants to borrow my help”.

    • な gives Kogoro’s spoken line a rough, matter-of-fact finish as he rushes out.
