名探偵コナン » Volume 11 » Page 50

The prime suspect in a murder has a rock-solid reason for his innocence: between the time he was on live television and the time of the murder, there’s no way he could have traveled the flights of stairs to reach the victim and return to the camera.

To test this, Inspector Megure has Detective Mouri repeatedly run the course from the television stage to the murder scene and back.

目暮(めぐれ):
「6(ぶん)47(びょう)か…」
“6 minutes and 47 seconds, huh...”
「どーしたんだ?(かい)()ごとに(おそ)くなってきとるじゃないか…」
“What's wrong? You're getting slower with each succession...”

Key Points

  1. 〜ごとに = with each one

    • Here (かい)()すごとに means “with each additional round” or “every successive try”.

    • It marks a change that happens repeatedly as the count increases.

  2. (かい)()す is the thing that repeats

    • The literal sense is “as the number of times increases”.

    • With each new attempt, Mouri is slower than before.

  3. 遅くなってきとる shows a gradual trend

    • This means “you’ve been getting slower”.

    • With 〜ごとに, it highlights a pattern: every round adds more fatigue.

    • 〜きとる here is the same as 〜きている.
