In a village Frieren once visited with Himmel’s party, a demon child killed and ate a villager’s daughter. When Frieren moved to finish off the wounded demon, the village chief stopped her, saying it doesn’t need to eat people to live and deserves a chance to make amends.

村長(そんちょう):
「家(うち)で手当(てあ)てをしよう。」
“I'll treat your wounds at my house.”
「丁度(ちょうど)畑(はたけ)の手伝(てつだ)いを探(さが)していたところだ。」
“As it happens, I was just looking for a hand in the fields.”

Key Points

1Was just doing with 〜ていたところだ
  • A 〜ていた verb plus ところだ says an action had been going on right up to now. It usually points out that the timing lines up with what just happened.
  • 探(さが)していた alone is just “was looking for”. ところだ ties the search to this moment. The chief needed help, and here is someone who needs a place to stay.
  • 丁度(ちょうど), “exactly” or “as it happens”, often comes with ところだ and stresses the timing. It’s also written in kana as ちょうど.
2畑(はたけ)の手伝(てつだ)い, “help in the fields”
  • 手伝(てつだ)い is the noun form of 手伝(てつだ)う, “to help”. It can mean the help itself or the person who gives it, so 畑(はたけ)の手伝(てつだ)い is a farmhand.
  • 畑(はたけ) is a field for vegetables or grain, not a flooded rice paddy.
3家(うち)で手当(てあ)てをしよう, “I’ll treat you at my house”
  • 手当(てあ)てをする means to give first aid or treat a wound. The volitional しよう offers the chief’s own action for the demon’s benefit: “I’ll treat you”.
  • 家(うち) read as うち means “home”, here the chief’s own house. で marks where the treatment will happen.
