Kogoro takes a client to the home of someone she’d be communicating with via pagers. They show the household family a music box that was left to the client by her correspondence partner. The music it plays reminds the homeowner of the koto his mother used to play.

小五郎(こごろ):
(かあ)さんってもしかしてあのお写真(しゃしん)の…」
“By "Mom", could that be the one in that photo…?”
常雄(つねお):
「ええ… (ちち)(よこ)写真(しゃしん)三年(さんねん)(まえ)他界(たかい)した(はは)春菜(はるな)です…」
“Yes... The photo beside my father's is my mother, Haruna, who passed away three years ago...”

Key Points

  1. 写真(しゃしん) = photograph, a copied image

    • The kanji (しゃ) points to copying or reproducing an image, so 写真(しゃしん) is a “true copy” in the sense of a photograph.

  2. あのお写真(しゃしん)の… leaves the person implied

    • Kogoro starts to ask whether “Mom” is the person in that photo, but trails off after .

    • A fuller version would be あのお写真(しゃしん)(ひと), “the person in that photo”.

  3. (ちち)(よこ)写真(しゃしん)

    • This stacks two phrases: (ちち)(よこ) means “beside my father,” and the second links that location to 写真(しゃしん).

    • The phrase identifies which photo he means: the photo beside his father’s photo.

  4. 他界(たかい)した is a respectful “passed away”

    • 三年(さんねん)(まえ)他界(たかい)した modifies (はは), giving “my mother, who passed away three years ago”.

    • 他界(たかい) is more formal and softened than simply saying ()んだ.
