Compound voicing with

Grammar: Sound Changes

連濁(れんだく), or compound voicing, changes the first consonant of a compound’s second part to its voiced counterpart. For example, 手(て) and 紙(かみ) combine as 手紙(てがみ), “letter”. The change is common, but it does not happen in every compound.

Recognize the Second Part

You may know 薬(くすり), “medicine”, and still hesitate over 目薬(めぐすり), “eye drops”. The second part is the same word. Its initial く has become ぐ through 連濁(れんだく).

The main kana-row changes are:

Plain RowVoiced RowExample

The second part changes at its beginning. In てがみ, か becomes が; the rest of かみ stays the same. The h-row gives b-row sounds, so ひ becomes び in はなび.

When 連濁(れんだく) Is Blocked

If the second part already contains a voiced obstruent, a g, z, d, or b sound, it normally resists 連濁(れんだく):

PartsActual ReadingWhy the Initial Sound Stays
山(やま) + 火事(かじ)山火事(やまかじ)かじ already contains じ.
合(あい) + 鍵(かぎ)合鍵(あいかぎ)かぎ already contains ぎ.

In both words, the initial か of the second part stays か. This restriction concerns the second part. A voiced consonant in the first part does not automatically block the change: 渋(しぶ) + 柿(かき) gives 渋柿(しぶがき), “astringent persimmon”.

Here “voiced” has a narrower meaning than “any sound made with the voice”. An m, n, or r sound does not trigger this restriction. The み in かみ does not prevent てがみ.

奈緒子(なおこ):
「今回(こんかい)は本当(ほんとう)っぽいね」
“This time it sounds true, huh?”
千春(ちはる):
「まだ わかんないわよ」
“We don't know that yet!”

Yamazaki claims charms began in ancient China, when people put 守(まも)り札(ふだ), “protective talismans”, into bags. 札(ふだ) already contains だ, so it stays ふだ rather than becoming ぶだ.

A Clue, Not a Complete Reading Rule

連濁(れんだく) is most common with native Japanese words. Compounds built from on-readings and recent loanwords are less likely to follow it, though there are exceptions such as 文庫本(ぶんこぼん), “paperback book”.

Even when no obvious restriction applies, a compound may keep the unvoiced sound. There is no complete rule that predicts every word’s reading. Learn a compound with its full reading. For a person’s name, use the reading given for that person.

When reading an unfamiliar compound, try restoring the second part’s plain consonant. A reading ending in がみ may contain かみ; a second part beginning with び may come from ひ. That gives you a word to look up.

Kumada takes a trip to the mountain, in hope that the bear living in his apartment will follow him there, then he can run away and leave the bear stranded behind. He has with him his employee Sanami, an expert on mountains, to act as a guide. During their hike, Sanami asks Kumada why he’s placing beans on the ground as they go.

熊田(くまだ):
「帰(かえ)りはこの豆(まめ)を頼(たよ)りに最短(さいたん)ルートで駆(か)け下(お)りる」
“On the way back, I'll use these beans as a guide and run down by the shortest route.”
「そのための印(しるし)だ」
“That's what the markers are for.”
砂波(さなみ):
「普通(ふつう)に下山(げざん)しましょうよ」
“Let's just go down the mountain normally.”

Kumada plans to race down the mountain, and Sanami would rather go down normally. 下山(げざん) is built from on-readings, げ and さん, and さん voices anyway. Sino-Japanese compounds voice less often, but some do.

Following a series of murders, Conan discovers a message hidden in sheet music. He explains it to Ran.

コナン:
「ピアノの鍵盤(けんばん)の左端(ひだりはし)から順(じゅん)に、アルファベットをあてはめて…」
“Starting from the leftmost key on the piano keyboard, I assigned each key a letter...”
「メッセージの文字(もじ)に相当(そうとう)する音(おと)を、譜面(ふめん)に書(か)きしるしただけだよ…」
“I simply wrote down the notes corresponding to the letters of the message on the sheet music...”
View Full Example

Conan explains the code in the sheet music, counting piano keys from the 左端(ひだりはし), “left end”. ひだり, “left”, plus はし, “end”, stays はし. Nothing in はし blocks voicing. This is simply one of the compounds that keeps the plain sound.

Names Voice Too

Family names are full of 連濁(れんだく). 高木(たかぎ) is たか + き, and 浜口(はまぐち) is はま + くち. But names don’t follow the pattern reliably: 山崎 can be やまざき or やまさき, and 中島 can be なかじま or なかしま, depending on the family. Use the reading given for the person.

After Shin’ichi was forced to take a deadly drug that instead shrank him back to a child, he took on the undercover name Conan and went to stay with his childhood friend Ran and her detective father in the hope of a lead to the black-clad men who drugged him. He later discusses with Professor Agasa about how useless Detective Mouri is. The professor reminds Conan that the poison was supposed to have killed him, so he can’t rush and let others know his true identity.

コナン:
「オレだけじゃなく、オレのまわりの人達(ひとたち)も危(あぶ)ないっていうんだろ?」
“You're saying it won't be just me, but the people around me will be in danger too, right?”
「心配(しんぱい)すんな!ちゃんと蘭(らん)にもおっちゃんにも、江戸川(えどがわ)コナンでとおしてるよ!!」
“Don't worry! I'm keeping up the Conan Edogawa act with Ran and the old man, too!!”

Conan assures Professor Agasa that he’s keeping up the Conan Edogawa act. 江戸川(えどがわ) is えど plus かわ, “river”, and か voices to が, as in many river names. The ど in えど doesn’t block it.

A new student, Ai Haibara, joins Conan’s class. 灰原(はいばら) is はい, “ash”, plus はら, “field”, and は voices to ば.

Why 鼻血 Uses ぢ

When ち and つ voice in recognizable compounds, the spelling can preserve that connection:

PartsCompoundMeaning
鼻(はな) + 血(ち)鼻血(はなぢ)nosebleed
みか + 月(つき)三日月(みかづき)crescent moon

In standard Japanese, ぢ and じ have the same pronunciation, as do づ and ず. These spellings retain the relationship to ち and つ. Both words appear in the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ kana spelling rules. Those rules also specify exceptions, so use a dictionary for uncertain spellings.

「できるのかな おまえ…」
“I wonder if you can do it.”
「俺(おれ) 陽菜(ひな)の部屋(へや)相当(そうとう)キレイにしてたんだぞ」
“I kept Hina's room pretty clean, you know.”

The students have just decided that Fudazuki is the one who littered: 札月(ふだづき)だったのか. The name ends in 月(つき), and the voiced つ is written づ, as in 三日月(みかづき).

Voicing and Doubling Are Different Changes

In 手紙(てがみ), か becomes が. In 学校(がっこう), the first reading がく becomes がっ before こう. The first is 連濁(れんだく); the second produces a 促音(そくおん).

Likewise, は becoming ぱ in 出発(しゅっぱつ) is a change to a p sound, not 連濁(れんだく). See consonant doubling with 促音(そくおん) for that pattern and the contrasting readings いっぽん, にほん, and さんぼん.
