Body and substance with 体

The kanji has the core meanings of body and substance, pointing to the essential frame or main bulk of a person or thing. It extends to ideas like physical condition, whole form, and embodied reality. It is used not only for the human body, but also for the main body of an object, the overall whole of a group, and things understood as concrete entities.

Etymology

This kanji is built from 亻 (person) and 本 (root, base, origin). These invoke imagery of the person together with the base or central structure that supports them, bringing attention to the body’s main frame and essential substance.
