Linking and succession with 連

The kanji has the core meaning of linking things together so that they form a chain, sequence, or connected whole. This extends to continuity, association, and people moving together.

Etymology

This kanji is an ideogrammic compound comprised of 辶 (movement) and 車 (vehicle), giving an image of movement joined with a carriage.

Communication

連絡 (Contact)

連絡(れんらく) means contact, communication, or getting in touch. It is the everyday word for connecting people or passing information along.

It combines 連 (link) with 絡 (entwine) to show information or people connected together.

Continuity

連続 (Continuation)

連続(れんぞく) means continuation, succession, or something happening one after another without a break.

It combines 連 (linked) with (continue) to show events continuing in a chain.

連休 (Consecutive holidays)

連休(れんきゅう) means consecutive holidays or a run of days off grouped together. It emphasizes that the holidays come in sequence rather than as a single isolated day.

It combines 連 (successive) with 休 (rest) to show days of rest linked one after another.
