Searching and probing with 探

The kanji has the meanings of search and probe.

At its core, is about reaching into somewhere hidden and feeling around for what is not immediately visible. From that physical image come broader senses like explore, investigate, and detect.

Etymology

This kanji is a phono-semantic compound compound comprised of 扌 (hand) as the semantic component and 罙 (deep; reaching far inward) as the phonetic component. These invoke imagery of a hand reaching deep into a hidden place, feeling around for something out of sight.

The meanings of search and probe are clear from this imagery. If you have to reach inward and test things by touch rather than seeing them directly, you are searching carefully for what is concealed. From this comes the wider sense of explore (searching through unfamiliar territory), investigate (probing for facts), and detect (finding what was hidden).

Common Words

探検(たんけん) means an expedition or exploration into an unfamiliar place. It is used for going into caves, ruins, mountains, or other unknown areas to investigate them directly.

Compared with a simple search, it carries a stronger sense of adventure and firsthand discovery.

It combines 探 (explore) with 検 (inspect or examine) to show exploration through close examination.
