解 is a kanji used to express separate or remove in Japanese.
Separting something complex into simpler parts gets the additional meanings of explain and understand.
Etymology
This kanji is an ideogramic compound comprised of 角 (horn), 刀 (knife), and 牛 (cow). These invoke imagery of a knife separating a horn from a cow.
